How to baste a hexie

Hexies are all the rage in the quilting world and I've been bitten by the hexie bug as well. There are several ways I've seen on how to baste a hexie. Here's how I've been doing mine.

Start with a template. I have a paper punch that I got several years ago. They don't make this particular model anymore, but there are several available at many craft stores in the scrapbooking section.

Pin a template to your fabric. I pin from the back, or right side so my thread doesn't catch on the pin.

Fold over one side of fabric around the template.

Fold over the second side going counterclockwise. Insert the threaded needle close to the outer edge a tack down the intersection of side one and two.

Continue folding over and tacking down the intersections until all sides have been folded over. Here are two finished hexies. The left one shows the front side and the right one shows the backside.
That's all there is to it! Once you have the hexies basted, they can be combined to create many different patterns. Here's what I am working on....

Time sure does fly when you're having fun! I've had an eventful year but it's still hard to believe it's been more than a year since I last posted. Life has had it's ups and downs for sure. We've moved - again. We were about an hour from Indianapolis, now we're smack dab in the big city. My DH lost his job, then found another one - which is the reason for the move. Then I lost my job.

We've gone from one grand baby - our little princess - to 4 by the time February gets here!

On the quilty front, I'm working on a quilt for little princess number 2 due next month. DD picked out the pattern and asked for teal and hot pink.

I've joined up a sew a long by Terry's Treasures from http://terrytreasures.blogspot.com/. It's the Charming Stars quilt. Here are some of the fabrics I've pulled:

And I've made some progress on my hexie project:

Time flies!

Oh my gosh! I can't believe it's been almost 3 months since I last posted. Time sure does get away from us doesn't it? What can I say - this being a new grandma thing is hard work. ;o) I barely have enough time to quilt, let alone blog!

I finished Alivia's baby quilt - finally. She's only 14 months old now! Here's the finished quilt:

The quilting behind her name is what took the longest, but it really helped the name pop. I have decided that the next quilt I make for a co-worker's baby will NOT be this complicated!! I know that compared to some quilts out there, this was a piece of cake, but this was the most complicated I've made so far.

I made the border quilting pretty simple but it was completely perfect for a little girl's quilt.

My latest hexie obsession. I've seen an absolutely beautiful quilt on pinterest and I just have to make a version of it. The inspiration quilt was pink and brown. I'm going with the same, but I think my pinks are a bit brighter though this picture doesn't really do any of the colors justice.

And no post would be complete without my little princess. This is her first experience in a high chair - she was more interested in trying to eat the highchair! Naw, she's not teething! lol. Hard to believe she'll be 6 months old in 2 days. Time really does fly!

That's all I have for today - happy quilting everyone!

HST

I have come to a conclusion - I don't like 2" HST!

They end up bunching on the ends - sometimes. I didn't grab a picture, but the one on each side of this one is not bunched.
Which is not good since I have ALOT of them to make. These aren't even a quarter of what I need for this quilt.
I need 3 1/2" and 2" to make the tesselating T blocks. The 3 1/2 HST play nice, but the 2" do not.

Wish me luck!! :o)
